Metarhizium anisopliae is a naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungus that thrives in dark, warm, and humid environments. Its spores infect insects by germinating hyphae that produce enzymes to break down the cuticle, penetrating the body and ultimately causing death. In addition to direct spraying onto insect bodies, when applied in fields, it remains for extended periods in plant crevices or dark soil. Insects are infected and killed when they crawl across these surfaces or when flying insects make contact with their mouthparts or bodies. Therefore, both pest control products are best applied after dark to achieve optimal efficacy.
